Claim: A viral video circulating on social media claims that bandits bombed a bridge in Niger State, leaving the road destroyed and making movement impossible for residents.

Verdict: True

Full Text: An X user on Monday, March 23rd, 2026, via his handle, posted a comment attached to which is a video clip claiming that a bridge connecting two communities in Niger State has been destroyed following a bomb attack by bandits. The bridge, according to him, which links the Wawa and Luma communities in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, was reportedly bombed in the early hours of Monday.

In the video, someone was speaking in the background in Hausa.

The post reads “BREAKING: Bandits bomb bridge linking two communities in Niger State. The bridge, which links Wawa and Luma communities in Borgu LGA of Niger State, was bombed in the early hours of Monday.”

NDRFactcheck reached out to a Hausa person who understands the language fluently to transcribe the words the person in the background was saying in English.

Here it is: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un, inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
(Indeed, we belong to God and to Him we shall return.)

This is the government road, and the bridge has collapsed, wallahi.
It is in the middle of the forest, wallahi.
The bridge has broken, wallahi.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.

The bridge cannot even allow a car to pass.
Here we are inside the government forest area. We came here on Sunday after Sallah, three days ago.
Wallahi, the bridge has completely collapsed.
Completely broken in the middle of the forest, wallahi.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.

We came here hoping to pass, but there is no road.
Wallahi, inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
The bridge has collapsed.

People should come and see what is happening here.

Please look at this situation.

Let us go back.”

At the time this report was written, there were 6 comments, 30 likes, 30 retweets, and 6,000 views, generating various reactions. One comment stood out to us: “The person making the video simply states that the bridge has collapsed; there’s no mention of it being bombed.”

NDRFactcheck verified the claim as the video spread rapidly on social media and might cause fear, particularly since Niger State has faced repeated bandit attacks recently.

Reports of attacks on public infrastructure like bridges can cause panic, disrupt travel, and undermine trust in security. Given the sensitive situation in North-Central, verifying whether the incident actually happened was essential.

 Verification

NDRFactcheck conducted a Google search of publications from reputable media organisations to know if it was reported.

The Nation newspaper confirmed the bombing of the bridge between Wawa and Lima Road in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State by terrorists. Also, others are here, here, here and here.

Supporting our findings, NDR reached out to the Niger State Police Command’s public relations officer via WhatsApp to confirm or debunk the comment attached to the video.  According to a report obtained from the police spokesperson of Niger State, on March 23, 2026, at approximately 6.30 a.m., suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device to destroy a bridge along Luma Road, Borgu LGA, which connected the communities of Luma, Babana, and Agwara.

A truck driver was killed by the explosion, and another person was hurt. It was found that the thugs had destroyed the bridge in opposition to local security activities. However, as the clearance operation is escalated, monitoring is still ongoing.

Conclusion

Findings from checks conducted show that the viral video circulating on social media is not misleading; while the background voice said it was a collapse, the Nigerian Police have confirmed it was a bombing perpetrated by bandits.
