The July 14 governorship election in Ekiti state would be a straight fight between Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor, Dr. Olukayode Fayemi of the leading opposition party All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr Fayemi who is the Minister of Solid Minerals, polled 941 votes to defeat his closest rival Engr Segun Oni who polled 481 votes. A total of 32 aspirants participated in the rescheduled APC primary election which was earlier disrupted.There were 11 invalid votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had earlier elected Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka as its flagbearer for the Ekiti governorship election which comes up in July.

Professor Eleka who is the deputy governor of Ekiti State emerged the candidate of the party having secured the highest number of votes in the primary which was held on Tuesday.

He scored 1,191 votes to defeat his co-contestant, former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

In his first reaction to his victory, Dr fayemi said “Civil servants, teachers, and Local government workers will smile in my new government. We are not coming to sack anybody,rather we are coming to make workers’ welfare to a top priority”.
