 ournalists drawn from 25 media organizations from both the print and electronics medium in the south west States converge at Ado Ekiti, September 19 and 20, 2013 for a workshop on conflict sensitive reporting.

The workshop with the theme “Enhanced Media Role In Conflict Resolution And Management For Sustainable Democracy And Development” was organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) with support of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Democratic Governance for Development (DGD II).

The main objective of the workshop was to enhance the conflict reporting skills of the trainees towards effective advocacy and engagement in conflict mediation, management and resolution as well as examining the role of the media in the transformation of the violent conflicts currently taking place in the country for the purpose of creating an enabling environment for development and the deepening of democratic governance.

In line with the objectives, the workshop featured presentations and discussions on the relation between conflict sensitive reporting and democratic development; Media as tool for promoting accountability in disaster management; the important place of language use and image in media reporting of conflicts; the imperative of conflict sensitivity in religion reporting and safety consciousness in conflict reporting.

 

The workshop also had syndicate sessions on the problems and challenges of conflict reporting in the Nigerian media and steps for improved conflict sensitive reporting by journalists so as to create the enabling environment for development and the deepening of democratic governance in Nigeria.
