The former governor of Osun State and the chairman of the governing council of the University of Ibadan, Chief Bisi Akande has said he would donate his allowances as a scholarship to support science students at the institution.

Chief Akande made this known in a a memorandum addressed to Ganiyu Saliu, registrar and secretary to the governing council University Of Ibadan, who described his appointment as a call to national service which he doesn’t intend to earn from.

He further stated that the payment should be in an endowment fund that covers the science courses like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology only, adding that the funding should cover the school stipulated fees and that If his appointment as the school pro-chancellor is terminated his Foundation would continue the payments.

He instructed the Dean of the Student Affairs office or another appropriate University Academic officer of the school to coordinate the selection of eligible science students.

The statement fully reads “I consider my appointment as the Pro-Chancellor and as the Chairman of Council for the University of Ibadan as a national call to service from which I do not intend to earn any remuneration. However, if the position is entitled to any allowances, for example for attending meetings of the Governing Council and its committees by the prior approvals of the Federal Government of Nigeria, you will be kind enough to assist me in applying any payments which may be due to me from such allowances solely for the benefits of some deserving undergraduate students of this University who are offering Science courses, namely in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology only.

“I expect the benefit to be in the form of a kind of endowment for something like annual scholarships or any other form of awards to cover the cost of accommodation and other officially approved fees charged by the University for such deserving science students.

“I suggest that the Dean of Student Affairs office or any such University Academic officer shall be involved in coordinating the selection of such eligible science students. In the possible event that any such anticipated allowances to me from this University appointment become terminated by whatever circumstances, to prevent any student beneficiaries of this endowment arrangement from becoming stranded, there is an already incorporated Adebisi Akande Foundation for similar purposes that would augment any shortfall arising from any such commitments incurred from the awards.

“This memo is being copied to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the said Adebisi Akande Foundation to enable him to liaise with you for an efficient implementation of this directive. smooth”, he concluded.

This is coming a day after the governing council of the university on Thursday, approved the increment in school fees of students of the ship from 100 to 400 level and also fixed the deadline for payment, a development that has attracted reactions from the students of the school who have begun an online agitation to protest the increment.

A statement by the President of the Students Union, Vice-President, and General Secretary Bolaji Aweda; Bolutife Aboderin, and Secretary, Daniel Elemide showed the student’s dissatisfaction with the development and threatened to shut the institution down.

“We reject the decision made by the council. We are embarking on a boycott of classes until our demands are fulfilled.

“We demand a reversal of the increase. The students demand that the school fees portal should be shut down within 24 hours until our demands are met,” the student maintained.

However, the governing council of the institution urged the students to opt in for the student loan the federal government is offering to meet up with the new school fee structure.
