The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to assign approximately 24,000 ad hoc workers to 5,718 polling units for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled on November 8, 2025.
The National Commissioner overseeing Anambra State and Chair of the Tenders Board Committee, Dr Kenneth Ikeagu, provided this information during a press briefing at the INEC state headquarters in Awka.
He stated that approximately 540 journalists have been accredited to cover the election, and noted that the commission is prepared for the upcoming governorship poll in accordance with its commitment to credible and inclusive elections.
Ikeagu stated that INEC is implementing a comprehensive strategy encompassing logistics, technology deployment, staff training, stakeholder engagement, and security coordination. The strategy also included a mock accreditation exercise conducted at selected polling units within the three senatorial districts.
A mock accreditation and voting exercise was conducted today, and the process proceeded as planned. Accreditation was completed in less than six minutes, and voting concluded within 36 minutes. The exercise aimed to test the upgraded Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, evaluate its efficiency, and assess the procedure for uploading results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal before the main election.
The mock accreditation took place at polling units in Awka South, Idemili North, Oyi, Anambra East, Aguata, and Orumba North local government areas. According to Ikeagu, the purpose of the exercise was to assess logistics, operational readiness, and preparedness for the upcoming poll.
He also confirmed that the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as the collection end on Sunday, October 26, unless otherwise directed by the headquarters. “We don’t have the total figure of those who have collected at the moment, but at the end of the day, we will announce the figure,” he said.
To ensure the timely delivery of election materials, Ikeagu said arrangements had been made for boats to transport officials and materials to riverine areas. “Materials will be leaving on Thursday afternoon, and if they leave at that time, and the election is on Saturday, there is no way there will be a late arrival of materials. We are very much prepared for this election,” he assured.
He urged voters to turn out early, reminding them that voting would begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. “Anambra people are very knowledgeable, and they have been adequately enlightened on how to vote and when to come out. If you are in the queue within this time, you are going to cast your ballot,” he said.
