Tinubu Brokers Truce Among Warring Factions to Restore Peace in Rivers State

In what appeared a win-win solution, the political imbroglio in Rivers state received attention from President Bola Tinubu on Monday, with all the aggrieved parties sitting at a conference table, negotiating and agreeing to a peaceful settlement deal on all issues that had in the last few weeks thrown the oil-rich state into political turmoil.

In what appeared a win-win solution, the political imbroglio in Rivers state received attention from President Bola Tinubu on Monday, with all the aggrieved parties sitting at a conference table, negotiating and agreeing to a peaceful settlement deal on all issues that had in the last few weeks thrown the oil-rich state into political turmoil.

The peace meeting, chaired by President Tinubu also had in attendance Governor Sim Fubara, former governors Nyesom Wike and Peter Odili, Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the deputy governor and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Martin Amaewhule.

In an eight-paragraph agreement signed all the parties except the President, it was sealed that “all matters instituted in the courts by Governor of Rivers State, Sir, Fubara and his team in respect of the political crisis in Rivers State shall be withdrawn immediately.

Other agreements include that “all impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor of Rivers State, shall be dropped immediately.

“The leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly as led by the Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule shall be recognised alongside the 27 members who resigned from the PDP

“The remunerations and benefits of all members of the State House of Assembly and their staff must be reinstated immediately and the Governor shall henceforth not interfere with the full funding of the Rivers State House of Assembly

“The Rivers State House of Assembly shall choose where they want to sit and conduct their legislative business without interference from the Executive ar of government.

“The Governor of Rivers State, Sir Fubara shall re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of Assembly.

“The names of all Commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned their appointments, because of the political crisis in the state shall be re-submitted to the House of Assembly for approval.

“There shouldn’t be a Caretaker Committee for the Local Governments in Rivers State. The disolution of the Local Government administration is null and void and shall not be recognised”

It is yet to be seen how many of these agreements and for how long it will serve.
