Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has condemned the spread of fake news attributed to him in recent months and has announced a $1000 reward for anyone who could help to fish out the authors who originate the stories.

Speaking on Arise Television on Wednesday, Professor Soyinka explained his position on the state of the nation and on post-elections matter which is making political actors deploy inciting expressions that can alienate the country, and the trends of fake news attached to him during the electioneering period.

Expressing his displeasure on the propagation of fake news about him, the Nobel Laureate described several comments attributed to him in recent months as “nauseating and praise-singing tracts,” stating that the propagators are using his name for their personal interests.

He added that apart from giving the reward of $1000 to anyone who can reveal the purveyors of false information, he is willing to go ahead to source funds to end the menace of misinformation about him.

“I also want to use this opportunity to warn your audience, please beware of fake news, a lot of damage is being done by the propagation of fake news. Even as recently as a few days ago, some garbage, some verbiage, some nauseating praise-singing tracts which we have seen so many times before have been resurrected and attributed to Wole Soyinka. It makes me sick, I mean I do not know why this problem cannot be solved. If people want to be praise singers let them do it in their own father’s name and leave Soyinka out of it,

“I want to use this opportunity to announce a reward of $1000 to anyone who can finger successfully the author of some of the tracts which have been attributed to me over the past six months, which were repudiated again and again

“I will even go further and try and raise additional funds for anyone who can please relieve us of this incubus of false attribution of fake news”, he said.

Reacting to the recent interview granted by the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba Ahmed on Channels Television, where he declared that the President-elect will not be sworn in, because he has not met the requirements of the law, Professor Soyinka indicated that such comment is an act of intimidation to the judiciary.

Professor Soyinka described Datti’s Comment as a “fascistic language”, saying that such expression can trigger provocations in the country. He stated that no one can dictate to the supreme court of Law as the highest judiciary entity in the country.

“I have never heard anyone threaten the judiciary on television the way Datti did. I heard the kind of menacing, blackmailing language as that to which we were treated by Datti. That kind of do-or-die attitude and provocation is not what I think we have all been struggling for,” Soyinka said.

“Nearly the totality of Datti’s comment in the interview was unbecoming. It was like trying to dictate to the supreme arbiter of the nation, and whatever you think of the supreme court, it is an institution we all refer to sooner or later. But Datti kept saying, in his wisdom, that the supreme court must agree with me. That is what is known as fascistic language and it is not acceptable.”

Recall that the comments made by the Labour Party Vice Presidential Candidate have been trailed by several reactions by Nigerians, in which Channels Television was slammed with a fine of five million Naira by the National Broadcasting Corporation.
