Governor Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde has won his re-election as Oyo state Governor for another four years. He won with a landslide, enjoying the popular mandate of Oyo state residents, defeating his closest opponent with a difference of 307,071 votes.
Results from the 33 local governments in the state show that the incumbent governor defeated 15 other candidates of different political parties in an election that was peaceful and orderly but plagued by low-voter turnout. Governor Seyi Makinde of the PDP polled 563,756 votes while Senator Folarin of the APC and his closest opponent scored 256,685 votes.
Oyo state has a total 3,276,675 registered voters according to INEC. But only 2,305,903 of them collected the Permanent Voter Cards out of which only889, 592 voters participated in the governorship election of Saturday March 18. 14,920 votes were rejected while 874,672 votes were valid votes shared by all the contestants.
Governor Makinde won convincingly in 31 out of the 33 local governments while Senator Folarin won in only two local government areas. The Oyo State Governorship election Returning Officer, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire declared Makinde the winner of the poll on Sunday.
The major candidates in Oyo State elections were the incumbent, Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party, Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Bayo Adelabu of the Accord Party.
