Following a dramatic back and forth with the executive arm of government, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday approved 15 nominees for commissioners and special advisers in the state governor’s cabinet.

The lawmakers had earlier rejected the 17 names presented among 39 names previously sent by the state governor last month without disclosing the reasons for not confirming the names.

The rejection generated controversial comments from the residents and the political stakeholders in the state who believed it was outcome of a power tussle between the state governor and the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

To douse the tension between the House of Assembly and the executive governor of the state, the state Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) had to mediate the matter, which eventually made the governor to resubmit another list consisting of 17 names of which some were in the government’s cabinet in the past four years on Monday.

After acknowledging the receipt of the new names submitted on Monday, the lawmakers delegated the assignment of screening and ratification to the Chief Whip of the house, Honourable Fatai Mosheed who heads the screening committee.

The screening process which began yesterday was concluded today and saw to the approval of only 15 names while the other two may have been rejected by the house.

Presiding on the sitting today, the speaker of the house, Rt Honourable Mudashiru Obasa announced the rejection of the former Commissioner of Mineral and energy resources, Engineer Lere Odusote and his colleagues the former commissioner of Economy and Planning and budget, Samuel Egube from returning as members of the cabinet for the second tenure of governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
