The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced some security features on the Form EC8A used in writing election results at the Polling Units. This was disclosed by Mr. Olurotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to journalists from Kogi state participating at a fact-checking workshop.

Section 60 of the Electoral Act provides the steps Presiding Officers must follow during post election procedure using the result sheets. Form EC8A is the most popular sheet INEC uses for recording at polling unit. It is the most important sheet because it is the first result sheet.

Mr. Oyekanmi who presented a paper titled “Combating Electoral Information Disorder or Fake News: The INEC Experience” at a two-day capacity building session for journalists in Kogi state held in Abuja said the security features were designed by the ICT department of the Commission.

Speaking on the 11 November governorship election in Kogi state, Mr. Oyekanmi who said the Commission was aware of the challenges voters face in Ganaja area of the state because of its population said 10 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS )machines would be deployed to Ganaja for the election.

He said those buying voters cards and collecting VIN of registered voters are wasting their resources and time as VIN cannot be used to vote and voting cannot be done by proxy.

Mr. Oyekanmi said iReV would be used in uploading results explained to the participants that the function of iRev is to upload results and not to transmit it. It is also not a collation centre.

He explained that the Commission last week had a meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA) and other security Chiefs on preparations for the off-cycle election stressing that the NSA had promised to deploy men and materials to provide security for residents of the three states before, during and after the election.
