Claim: Anambra Records 58% drop in voter turnout in eight years
Verdict: True.
A claim by user 2_amaechi posted on that Anambra has recorded a drop in voter turnout over the past eight years.
Ndrfactcheck found that in an election monitoring group, Kimpact Development Initiative, under the Strengthening Electoral Accountability Project, voter turnout has decreased by over 58% in the past eight years in Anambra State.
Using the data available on the Vanguard newspaper, the INEC chairman lamented that despite Anambra’s impressive register of 2,802,790 registered voters, the state has historically recorded poor turnout during governorship elections. He recalled that in 2013, voter turnout stood at 25.5 percent (413,005 valid votes from 1,770,125 registered voters), dropped to 20.1 percent in 2017 (422,314 votes from 2,364,134 registered voters), and plummeted to 10.27 percent in 2021 (241,523 votes from 2,466,638 registered voters). Anambra experienced a 59.72% drop in voter turnout between 2013 and 2021.
Hence, the claim was found to be true.
