After nights of vigil soaked in attention, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday finally declared the governorship candidate of the Labour Party Alex Otti as the winner of the governorship election in Abia State. The Labour Party will now have a representative in the comity of Governors.

The electoral commission declared Otti who won 10 out of the 17 local governments in the state as the winner of the polls ahead of his closest opponents having Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) followed with 6 local government and Enyinnaya Nwafor of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) who was victorious in one.

The electoral commission had earlier suspended the collation of results in the state, following a report of thuggery and violence in some parts of the state which led to the declaration poll inconclusive in the state.

Meanwhile, after reviewing the incidents, the electoral commission later announced the resumption of the collation exercise on Wednesday 22nd, March 2022.

Alex Otti’s victory is a major achievement for the Labour Party which has created waves in the 2023 general election but didn’t have much to show for it in terms of elective positions.

Consequently, the Labour candidate was declared winner of the controversial election in the state polling the total 175,467 to beat the PDP candidate who polled 88,529 while the YPP candidate got 28,972.
